The Kaiser Permanente Biostatistical Consulting Unit (BSCU) was founded in 2004 in response to growing research interest in​ Kaiser Permanente medical centers across Northern California. In 2023, Juleon Rabbani, DrPH became our program director with a mission to elevate our medical education and community health research programs. Our highly skilled programming, scientific, and operational ​ st​aff collaborate across three teams to support this mission. ​​

Our core mission is to su​pport ​clinician-led scientific research through innovative methods and collaborative partnerships.​

Consultati​on Servi​ces​​

The BSCU provides consultation services to Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) clinicians seeking to develop a Community Health grant and to residents and fellows in KPNC Graduate Medical Education Programs. Consultation eligibility criteria are on our Resources page here. Our consultation services include:​​​​

Provide expert advice on selecting the appropriate design for research studies based on the research question and resources.​

Offer guidance on the use of statistical techniques for analyzing research data.​

Analyze existing data sources to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a study, identify potential challenges, and recommend ​solutions.

Calculate the required sample size for a study to ensure it is adequately powered to detect statistically significant effects.​​​

Help in preparing and refining applications for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or Research Determination Office (RDO) exemption, ensuring compliance with Kaiser Permanente ​standards.​​

Support​ the collection and organization of research data from existing Kaiser Permanente Northern California​ data sources or clinician-led chart review.

Apply appropriate statistical methods to interpret research findings.​​

Aid in the preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts for scholarly dissemination.​​
