In 2024, the Kaiser Permanente Northern California (KPNC) Division of Research (DOR) Biostatistical Consulting Unit (BSCU) operated on over $5.6 million to support KPNC medical education and community health research programs and conduct novel scientific investigations. Our clients implemented nearly 450 scholarly projects. Topics covered a wide range of clinical specialties and research areas, with a strong emphasis on improving patient outcomes, evaluating new treatments, exploring the impact of various interventions, identifying disparities in healthcare, and investigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Projects also focused on quality improvement and the use of technology in healthcare.
Our investigators produced over 100 scholarly outcomes (38 manuscripts and 73 conference presentations). These were published in 29 peer-reviewed journals and presented at 41 conferences. Scholarly outcomes covered 18 clinical topic areas, including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology/oncology, head & neck surgery, hepatology, infectious disease, internal medicine, mental and behavioral health, neonatology, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, podiatric surgery, thoracic surgery, and urogynecology.
Contributions to the body of knowledge were significant – teams published in several high-impact journals, including the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the Journal of the American Heart Association, Pediatrics and the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open. They also shared findings at high-profile conferences across the nation, such as the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American College of Cardiology annual meetings.
Our 38 peer-reviewed papers generated and advanced useful ideas for our learning health system. Some shed light on the importance of considering demographic and socioeconomic factors in assessing health risks and outcomes. Others highlighted the need for personalized and targeted approaches to care, noting that risk factors and treatment outcomes can vary significantly across different patient subgroups. There was also a focus on the use of technology and data analysis to improve care, such as the use of secure messaging, electronic medical records (EMR), and natural language processing. Several studies indicated that new approaches to care and management are needed to optimize treatment and outcomes.
